A special type of difference equation with periodic coefficients is studied. The question of \textit{G. G. Gundersen} and \textit{I. Laine} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 111, 281--300 (1985; Zbl 0593.34014)] is discussed. It is proved the solution must be a periodic function or algebraic one. The special case of a quadratic right side part of the equation is considered.
