Counter to a conjecture of \textit{S. Malik} and \textit{J. L. Mott} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 28, 249-264 (1983; Zbl 0536.13001)], the author constructs a ring R such that \(R(X_ 1,...,X_ n)\), the Nagata ring in n indeterminates over R, is a strong S-domain but R and \(R[X_ 1,...,X_ n]\) are not. Also, there is a ring R that is a strong S-domain whilst neither R(X) nor R[X] is. New conjecture: \(R[X_ 1,...,X_ n]\) is a strong S-domain if and only if R, \(R(X_ 1),...,R(X_ 1,...,X_ n)\) are. Connections are made between strong S-domains and Jaffard domains [see \textit{D. F. Anderson}, \textit{A. Bouvier}, \textit{D. E. Dobbs}, \textit{M. Fontana} and the author, Expo. Math. 6, No.2, 145-175 (1988; Zbl 0657.13011)].
