The operator equation in the title has a long history, see for instance \textit{M. Rosenblum} [Duke Math. J. 23, 263-269 (1956; Zbl 0073.330)]. The importance of that linear equation for operator theory, integral equations or mathematical physics is by now mostly accepted. The author studies this equation under a series of natural assumptions like: B is diagonalizable with eigenvalues \(b_ 1,b_ 2,...\), the operator A has an increasing sequence of finite dimensional invariant subspaces, compatible with the basis of eigenvectors of B and \(A-b_ i\) are left invertible operators. These conditions are appropriate for a numerical treatment of the problem (existence and uniqueness of the solution), discussed in the second half of the paper.
