The background of the paper under review is provided by the construction of \textit{T. Voronov} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 202, No. 1--3, 133--153 (2005; Zbl 1086.17012), Trav. Math. 16, 163--186 (2005; Zbl 1136.17014)] of \(L_\infty\)-structures starting from Maurer-Cartan elements in graded Lie algebras. The main result of the present paper is that gauge equivalences of Maurer-Cartan elements respecting a certain graded Lie subalgebra always give rise to \(L_\infty\)-automorphisms. This fact is established both in a formal setting and in the case when the gauge equivalence is a flow. These results are illustrated by proving that the \(L_\infty\)-algebra structure on a submanifold of a Poisson manifold is canonical modulo the \(L_\infty\)-automorphisms. Applications to presymplectic manifolds and regular Dirac structures are also discussed.
