The author studies the singularities defined by mixed functions, and provides also a wide class of real analytic functions \(f: \mathbb R^{2n} \to \mathbb R^2\) which define Milnor fibrations. An analytic function \(f=f(z,\bar z): \mathbb C^n \to \mathbb C\) in complex variables \(z=(z_1, \dots, z_n)\) and their conjugates \(\bar z=(\bar z_1, \dots, \bar z_n)\) is called a mixed function. The author studies the mixed functions and the mixed hypersurfaces \(f^{-1}(0)\) by techniques similar to those of complex hypersurface singularities. In fact, the following are provided: (1) A notion of non-degeneracy with respect to naturally defined Newton boundary \(\Gamma\) in \(\mathbb R^n\). (2) The canonical resolution which is the composite of the usual toric modification associated with a regular fan obtained from \(\Gamma^*\) and the ``real blowing up'' or ``polar blowing up.'' (3) The Milnor fibration theorem for strongly non-degenerate convenient mixed functions. (4) A'Campo type formula for the zeta function of the monodromy and Kouchnirenko type formula for the Milnor number in the case of \(n=2\). This paper is carefully written and includes many examples which help the reader understand the theory.
