The paper deals with graded Calabi-Yau algebras of dimension \(3\). \textit{R. Bocklandt} [in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 212, No. 1, 14-32 (2008; Zbl 1132.16017)] proved that these algebras are isomorphic to path algebras of quivers modulo relations derived from a superpotential. Let \(A=A(Q,W_{N+1})\) be a graded Calabi-Yau algebra of dimension \(3\), where \(W_{N+1}\) denotes the potential and \(N+1\) is its degree. Since \(A\) is graded, \(W_{N+1}\) can be chosen to be homogeneous. Suppose \(W'\) is a not necessarily homogeneous potential of degree at most \(N\). The authors prove that \(A'=A(Q,W_{N+1}+W')\) is a PBW deformation of \(A\), and \(A'\) is Calabi-Yau. Moreover, if the characteristic of the base field does not divide \(N!\) and \(A'\) is an arbitrary PBW deformation of \(A\), then the authors show that \(A'\) derives from a potential if and only if a certain condition involving only the degree \((N-1)\) part of the relations of \(A'\) holds. The authors illustrate their result by looking at several examples, such as Yang-Mills algebras, cubic Artin-Schelter regular algebras, and antisymmetriser algebras.
