Both, locally conformal Kähler (LCK) manifolds and Vaisman manifolds are not stable under small deformations. It was proven by the second author of the present paper [cf. \textit{M. S. Verbitsky}, Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 246, 54--78 (2004); translation from Tr. Mat. Inst. Steklova 246, 64--91 (2004; Zbl 1101.53027)] that the Kähler metric of the universal covering of a Vaisman manifold admits a Kähler potential. Moreover, such a property is stable under small deformations, and, hence, a Vaisman manifold deforms to an LCK manifold (that is not necessarily a Vaisman manifold). The authors of the present paper define LCK manifolds with potential as a natural generalization of Vaisman manifolds. It is proved that an LCK manifold with potential can be compactified to a Stein manifold by adding one point. Also, the authors show that any LCK manifold with potential can be embedded into a Hopf manifold. This is an extension of a similar result obtained by the authors for Vaisman manifolds [cf. \textit{L.Ornea} and \textit{M. Verbitsky}, Math. Ann. 332, No.~1, 121--143 (2005; Zbl 1082.53074)].
