There are some quantities that are conserved by solutions of classical field equations but are not conserved on the quantum level (i.e., there appear ''anomalies''). The reason is that the quantization procedure lowers the symmetry of a theory. In this review the gauge and gravitational anomalies are related with index theorems for elliptic operators. The gauge and gravitational theories are formulated in the language of modern differential geometry.
