Let K be an algebraically closed field. In this paper, for each positive integer \(r\geq 2\), a class of modules \({\mathcal E}_ r\) is built from height functions h, sequences of positive integers \((m_ 2,...,m_{r-1})\), and sequences of linear functionals \(L=(\ell_ 2,...,\ell_ r)\) on the module of rational functions K(X). The class \({\mathcal E}_ r\) includes all purely simple Kronecker modules of rank r. A Krull-Schmidt-type theorem is proved for \({\mathcal E}_ r\). For \(\theta\in K\), let \(\alpha (\theta)=(\ell_ r(X-\theta)^{-1},...,\ell_ r(X-\theta)^{-1})\). A module M constructed from \(\alpha\) is a direct sum of rank-one modules. When a module M in \({\mathcal E}_ r\) is purely simple, it is shown that \(\alpha\) agrees with any rational functional on only a finite set and the power series arising from \(\ell_ 2,...,\ell_ r\) are not expansions of rational functions. If \(r=2\) these necessary conditions are also sufficient for M to be purely simple.
