For a Banach function algebra A on the compact space X and a closed subalgebra I of A the set X is divided by I into sets of constancy. Here it is shown that if I is stable with respect to multiplication by the real functions in A and if \(I+\bar I\) \((^-\) is complex conjugation) is dense in \(A+\bar I\) then I (and hence \(\bar I)\) is exactly the continuous functions that are constant on each of these sets of constancy mentioned above. This is related to earlier work of \textit{I. Glicksberg} [Math. Scand. 23 (1968), 188-192 (1969; Zbl 0187.385)] and by \textit{Wade} [On a theorem of Glicksberg, Proc. Jap. Acad. 48 (1972)].
