A ``quotient-factorization'' theorem is proved for the Toeplitz algebra of a lexicographic product of ordered groups. This is used to determine for what finite-rank ordered groups the corresponding Toeplitz algebra is of type I. These turn out to be the groups \({\mathbb{Z}}^ n\) lexicographically ordered. Some aspects of the Toeplitz operator theory are analysed in this case, and an index theorem is established.
