Let (M,g,J) be a compact Kähler manifold of complex dimension n and denote by \(\omega\) the cohomology class represented by the fundamental form (the Kähler form) \(\Omega\). (M,g,J) is said to be cohomologically Einsteinian if \(c_ 1=a\omega\) for some \(a\in {\mathbb{R}}\), where \(c_ 1\) denotes the first Chern class of M. In this paper the authors show that \(({\mathbb{C}}P^ n,g_ 0)\) is completely characterized within the class of cohomologically Einsteinian manifolds by the spectrum of \(\Delta\) for p-forms, for all n and p, with the following possible exceptions: i) n and p satisfy \(p^ 2-mp+m(m-1)/6=0\), \(m=2n\); ii) \(p=1\) or m-1, \(2\leq m\leq 14.\) They also characterize \((S^{2n+1},g_ 0)\) within the class of compact cohomologically Einstein Sasakian manifolds with the same possible exceptions, where now \(m=2n+1\).
