Algorithms for the fast solution of non-separable elliptic equations in two-dimensional, irregular domains, that arise in ocean modelling, are described. The purpose of the paper is to show that in such situations much faster methods can be employed on the base of fast solvers in rectangular regions. The method proposed is a combination of the capacitance matrix method and a fast iteration that uses a fast Poisson solver such as multiple Fourier transforms. Brief reviews of the methods are given and the combinations are outlined without giving proofs of consistency or convergence.
