This paper gives explicit descriptions of connected linear Lie groups of type \(E_ 8\), involutive automorphisms on these Lie groups, and the corresponding subgroups of fixed points. The results are quite technical and the reader should have at hand the first two parts in this sequence of papers as a source of notation. Part I [J. Fac. Sci., Shinshu Univ. 20, 131-144 (1985; Zbl 0604.22006)] dealt with \(G_ 2\), \(F_ 4\), and \(E_ 6\); Part II [Tsukuba J. Math. 14, No. 2, 379-404 (1990; Zbl 0741.22004)] with \(E_ 7\).
