The author considers Hankel and Toeplitz operators acting on Dirichlet- type spaces \(D_ \alpha\) that include the classical case \((\alpha=1/2)\), Hardy space \((\alpha=0)\), and Bergmann space \((\alpha<0)\). For such operators, he considers questions of boundedness, compactness, and membership in the Schatten classes \(S_ p\) that have been much studied in various contexts in recent years. Associated with an analytic function \(f\) on the unit disk \({\mathbf D}\) are ``small'' and ``big'' Hankel operators \(h_ f\), \(H_ f\). The author proves that these, as well as the corresponding Laurent operator \(M_ f\), are simultaneously bounded (or compact, or in \(S_ p\)). When \(\alpha\), \(p\) are such that \(\alpha> 1/2\) and \(\alpha p>1\), he proves that the three operators are bounded iff they are in \(S_ p\) and that this occurs iff \(f- f(0)\) is in \(D_ \alpha\). He obtains similar criteria for Toeplitz operators whose symbol is a positive measure \(\mu\) on \({\mathbf D}\). These results differ significantly from the criteria obtained in Hardy and Bergmann spaces.
