This survey article deals primarily with the use of systems of orthogonal polynomials in construction of implicit Runge-Kutta algorithms. Zero's of the polynomials are employed as abscissa's in the algorithms. Orthogonal systems which may be used are those of Legendre, Jacobi, Chebyshev and Laguerre type. Of special interest are algorithms associated with the Laguerre polynomials in which the \(A\) matrix of the Runge-Kutta method has the desirable property of having a single eigenvalue. Several other non-standard applications of orthogonal polynomials in the theory of discrete approximations to ordinary differential equations are discussed briefly.
