A theorem of \textit{Y. Zhang} [Can. J. Math. 43, 652-672 (1991; Zbl 0736.16007)] asserts that any regular component of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of an Artin algebra either is a tube \(\mathbb{Z} A_ \infty/n\) or is \(\mathbb{Z}\Delta\) for some valued quiver \(\Delta\). It was known that any finite wild quiver \(\Delta\) with at least three vertices could appear in this context, and that the infinite quivers \(\mathbb{A}_ \infty\), \(\mathbb{A}^ \infty_ \infty\), \(\mathbb{B}_ \infty\), \(\mathbb{C}_ \infty\), and \(\mathbb{D}_ \infty\) also appear. Since many examples had been considered, there was speculation that these might be the only possibilities. Here the authors show that indeed, there are many other \(\Delta\)'s that occur. To wit, let \(\Delta\) be an infinite, locally finite, connected, valued quiver without oriented cycles. If \(\Delta\) has only finitely many vertices of valency greater than two, and its valuation satisfies a symmetrizability condition, then some finite-dimensional algebra over some field has a regular Auslander-Reiten component of shape \(\mathbb{Z}\Delta\). The construction is fairly intricate, and depends on a notion called a Kronecker biextension of an algebra.
