Let \(\widetilde{G}(\mathbb{C})\) be the simply connected Kac-Moody group associated to the root datum corresponding to a generalized Cartan matrix of affine type. We have the following kinds of ``basic'' automorphisms of \(\widetilde {G}(\mathbb{C})\): a) inner automorphisms, b) diagonal automorphisms, induced by any \(\theta\in\Hom(\mathbb{Z}\widetilde {\Pi},\mathbb{C}^*)\), where \(\mathbb{Z} \widetilde{\Pi}\) is the free abelian group generated by the simple roots, c) field automorphisms, induced by any automorphism of \(\mathbb{C}\), d) graph automorphisms, induced by any automorphism of the Dynkin diagram, e) sign automorphisms: the identity and the Cartan involution. The authors prove that every automorphism of \(\widetilde {G}(\mathbb{C})\) is uniquely expressible as the product of an inner automorphism, a diagonal automorphism, a field automorphism, a graph automorphism and a sign automorphism.
