This paper considers the maximal number of limit cycles for a class of nonsmooth piecewise linear systems on the plane as the switching line is xy=0. By setting up a Poincaré map, the authors provide the expression of the bifurcation function, which can be used to investigate the limit cycle bifurcation problem. The authors also provide the conditions for appearance of the center point at the infinity. As an application, they show the existence of systems exhibiting five limit cycles bifurcating from infinity. The authors use Lyapunov quantities to carry out the research and obtain some new results.
