This paper deals with an analysis of reflection and transmission of elastic waves in an inhomogeneous medium. A transfer matrix for the linear inhomogeneous elastic layer is presented. This matrix is then used to relate the upper and lower boundary values of the multi-layer system. Examples of two kinds of inhomogeneous layers are given with numerical computations and graphical presentations. Comparisons between the exact and numerical solutions suggest that the model developed here could be useful for more complex inhomogeneous materials and for oblique incident elastic waves.
