Multiresolution analysis plays a major role in wavelet theory. In this paper, the author studies multiresolution of \(L_ p\) spaces. Let \(S\) be a shift-invariant subspace of \(L_ p(\mathbb{R}^ s)\) \((1\leq p\leq \infty)\) generated by a finite number of functions with compact support, and let \(S_ k\) be the \(2^ k\)-dilate of \(S\) for each integer \(k\in \mathbb{Z}\). The author shows that the intersection of \(S_ k\) \((k\in \mathbb{Z})\) is always trivial. It is more difficult to deal with the problem whether the union of \(S_ k\) \((k\in \mathbb{Z})\) is dense in \(L_ p(\mathbb{R}^ s)\). The case \(p= 1\) or 2 can be solved by Wiener's density theorem. Under the assumption that \(S\) is refinable, the author proves that the union of \(S_ k\) \((k\in \mathbb{Z})\) is dense in \(L_ p(\mathbb{R}^ s)\), provided \(s= 1,2\), or \(2\leq p< \infty\). The same is true for \(p= \infty\), if \(L_ \infty(\mathbb{R}^ s)\) is replaced by \(C_ 0(\mathbb{R}^ s)\). He gives counterexamples to demonstrate that for \(s\geq 3\) and \(1< p< 2\), the aforementioned results on density are no longer true in general.
