Let \(M\) be an \(n\)-dimensional complex manifold, and let \(B\) be the open unit ball for a norm on \(\mathbb{C}^ n\). Let \(p\in M\), and let \(f: M\to B\) be a holomorphic map such that \(f'(p): T_ p M\to T_ 0 B\) is an isometry for the Kobayashi metrics. The author finds convexity conditions on \(M\) that force \(f\) to be biholomorphic. For example, if \(M\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{C}^ n\), it suffices to assume that \(M\) is taut. The results were stated by the author in C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 313, No. 5, 281-284 (1991; Zbl 0739.32026), and many of the ideas stem from a paper by \textit{C. M. Stanton} [Math. Ann. 253, No. 2, 129-135 (1980; Zbl 0453.32008)]. Recently, \textit{J.-P. Vigué} [Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 21, No. 1, 145-155 (1994)] considered the analogous problem in an infinite-dimensional setting.
