\textit{G. G. Kemkhadze} [Tr. Tbilis. Mat. Inst. Razmadze 55, 27-38 (1977; Zbl 0448.42019)] proved that if \(f\) belongs to \(L \text{log}^ + L\) on the unit square \(Q\), then the spherical means \(S_ R f\) of the double Haar-Fourier series of \(f\) converge almost everywhere. Here, the authoress obtains a general result which shows Kemkhadze's theorem is best possible. Indeed, she proves that there is a function \(f\), belonging to \(L(\text{log}^ + L)^ p\) for some \(0< p< 1\), such that \(\limsup_{R\to\infty} S_ R f=+ \infty\) almost everywhere on \(Q\).
