A global method is discussed for the approximation and construction of parametric curves using constraints. The method is based on a variational formulation in which the squared integrals of the zero, first and second derivative seminorms of the approximated and approximation curves are used. A weighting factor is attached to each seminorm. The solution of the constrained variational problem is done by the finite element method over Bernstein basis functions. The range of subjects discussed is comprehensive.
