The analysis of a 9-point fourth-order compact difference scheme for a two-dimensional convection-dominated diffusion problem is presented. Based on asymptotic analysis of the local formation error conclusions concerning the properties of the scheme in the highly convection-dominated case are made. These conclusions are supported by numerical experiments for two problems.
