A subgroup \(U\) of a finite group \(G\) is said to be abnormal in \(G\) provided \(g\in\langle U,U^g\rangle\) for all \(g\in G\). For soluble groups \(G\), \(U\) is abnormal in \(G\) if and only if \(N_G(V)=V\) for every subgroup \(V\) containing \(U\) of \(G\). Answering a question raised by \textit{K. Doerk} and \textit{T. Hawkes} in their book ``Finite soluble groups'' (1992; Zbl 0753.20001), the author shows that the unitary group \(G=U_3(3)\) contains a nonabnormal subgroup \(U\cong S_4\) such that \(U\leq V\leq G\) implies \(N_G(V)=V\).
