Let \({\mathcal F}\) be a family of subgroups of a given discrete group \(G\). The author studies properties of groups with finite cohomological dimension (relative to a family \({\mathcal F}\)). Then connections between a number of possible algebraic counterparts to proper \(G\)-spaces considered e.g. by \textit{P. Baum, A. Connes} and \textit{N. Higson} [Contemp. Math. 167, 241-291 (1994; Zbl 0830.46061)] are investigated.
