The authors review the spin-projection method of Barnes and Rivers and apply it to linearized fourth-order gravitational theories which follow from a Lagrangian of the form Einstein-Hilbert term plus quadratic curvature terms. They choose some gauge-fixing term and calculate the propagator for the gauges named after Julve-Tonin, de Donder, Feynman, and Einstein-Hitzer-Dehnen. The propagator is also calculated for the Pauli-Fierz theory with a mass term where the gauge freedom is broken.
