In a 5-dimensional version of the source free Klein-Gordon equation one can consider the equation to be a 4-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with a mass term determined by connection components arising from the extra dimension. For certain metrics, including a generalization of the Schwarzschild and a cosmological (radiation dominated) universe, the mass is variable. This might have some significant implications both for cosmology and for theories of elementary particles.
