Symbolic computations solve systems of differential equations (ordinary or partail) by computing a differential Gröbner basis of the differential ideal. Since this may be very time-consuming, the author suggests a preprocessing step. His heuristic is based on linear algebra leading to simplified input equations. It is implemented in CRACK and has been applied to problems from general relativity. The paper is written in a sloppy, non-algebraic language concentrating on examples.
