The authors of this very interesting paper study the shock wave solutions for the general hyperbolic-parabolic system of conservation laws \(U_t+F(U)_{x_j}=(B(U)U_x)_x\) of the form \[ U=\binom u v , \quad F^0=\binom f g, \quad B=\begin{pmatrix} 0&0\\ b_{1}&b_{2} \end{pmatrix}, \] where \(u,f\in\mathbb{R}^{n-r}\), \(v,g,b\in \mathbb{R}^{r}\). A standing-wave solution (viscous shock profile) is denoted by \(U=\bar U(x)\), \(\lim_{y\to \pm\infty }U(y)=U_{\pm }=(u_{\pm }, v_{\pm })\). It is assumed that \(F,B\in C^5\) (ensures regularity). Some standard conditions associated with local well-posedness of the considered system hold. \((df, b)^t\) has full rank on \(\{\overline U (\cdot )\}\), that is, a technical condition corresponding to the requirement that hyperbolic modes be everywhere noncharacteristic with respect to the standing shock. The strict hyperbolicity and noncharacteristicity of endstates \(U_{\pm }\) with respect to the associated inviscid system \(U_t+F(U)_x=0\) is required. The dissipativity condition of Kawashima (1983), concerning linearized stability of constant solutions \(U\equiv U_{\pm }\) is satisfied as well. Following the pointwise semigroup approach, the authors establish sharp pointwise Green function bounds and consequent linearized stability for viscous shock profiles of the system under consideration. It is required existence of stable point spectrum of the linearized operator about wave, transversality of the connecting profile and hyperbolic stability of corresponding ideal shock of the associated inviscid system, with no additional assumptions on the structure of strength of the shock. The application of the considered theory in gas dynamics and MHD is discussed.
