The author defines higher-dimensional analogues of vertex algebras called \(G_n\)-vertex algebras. He shows that the duality properties known to hold in the case of ordinary vertex operator algebras carry over to \(G_n\)-vertex algebras with almost the same proofs as in the ordinary case. For instance, he shows that locality together with some weak assumptions implies the Jacobi identity. It is further shown that for any vector space \(W\), any set of mutually local multivariable vertex operators on \(W\) generates in a canonical way an axiomatic \(G_n\)-vertex algebra with \(W\) as a module. As the author points out, it seems plausible that his notion of \(G_n\)-vertex algebra is equivalent to \textit{R. E. Borcherds}' notion of commutative \(G_n\)-vertex algebra defined in [Topological field theory, primitive forms and related topics, Prog. Math. 160, 35--77 (1998; Zbl 0956.17019)].
