The author investigates the structure of the universal algebra of polylogarithms and presents, as a basis of this algebra, a universal family of single-valued multiple polylogarithms. The versions constructed by Bloch-Wigner, Wojtkowiak and Zagier are written explicitly in terms of these functions.
