The basic idea is to provide a comparison between two methods in the theory of compressible materials in nonlinear elastostatics. The first method was suggested earlier by the author [Proc. R. Irish Acad., Sect. A 89, 185-193 (1989; Zbl 0696.73026)], and the second, more general, approach was recently proposed by \textit{J. M. Hill} [IMA J. Appl. Math. 50, No. 2, 195-201 (1993; Zbl 0773.73038)]. In the present paper the author demonstrates that, in the application to the Blatz-Ko material, the former method appears more useful than the latter one. Other classes of compressible materials are also briefly discussed.
