This is an interesting paper that continues the investigation, initiated by \textit{E. Hrushovski} [Turk. J. Math. 36, No. 2, 173--198 (2012; Zbl 1260.03065)], of the relation between amalgamation properties and groupoids definable in a stable theory (some related questions are proved in the general simple context). The paper has three parts; in the first part the authors show that for stable theories certain groupoids that arise from the failure of 3-uniqueness have to be abelian. In the second part, the authors introduce a boundary property, for simple theories, and connect it to the existence and uniqueness of the amalgamation properties. The last part of the article deals with the difficulties to generalize the result on the existence of a definable groupoid assuming the failure of 3-uniqueness to simple theories.
