Let \(a(n)\) and \(p(n)\) be sequences of integers such that \(a(n)> 0\), \(p(n)\geq 0\), \(p(n)\not\equiv 0\) and \(P(n)=\sum^\infty_{s=n}p(s)\) exists for all \(n\geq n_0\geq 0\). Moreover let \(0\leq g(n)\leq n\), \(\lim g(n)= \infty\) and \(\sum^\infty_{s=n_0} a^{-1}(g(s))= \infty\) for all \(n\geq n_0>0\). Consider the following recurrence \[ \begin{aligned} \alpha_0(n) & =P(n)>0,\\ \alpha_1(n) & = \sum^\infty_{s=n} {\alpha_0^2 (s+1)\over g(s)},\\ & \dots \\ \alpha_{m+1} (n) & =\sum^\infty_{s=n} {\bigl(\alpha_0(s+1) +\cdots+ \alpha_m(s+1) \bigr)^2 \over a\bigl(g(s) \bigr)}.\end{aligned} \] If \(\alpha_m(n)\) exists for \(m=1,2, \dots, n-1\), but \(\alpha_{m_0}(n)\) does not exist, where \(m_0\geq 1\) is a positive integer or \(\alpha(n)\) exists but for every sufficiently large \(n_1\) there exists \(n^*\geq n_1\) such that \(\lim_{m\to\infty} \alpha_m(n^*) =\infty\), then the functional difference equation \[ \Delta\bigl( a(n)\Delta x(n)\bigr)+ p(n)x\bigl( g(n) \bigr)=0 \] is oscillatory.
