Suppose that \(X\) and \(Y\) are isometric subspaces of \( L_p[0,1]\). Based on a theorem of Plotkin and Rudin, the author shows that if \(X\) is the range of a linear projection \(P\) and \(p \geq 1\) is not an even integer then \(Y\) is the range of a linear projection \(Q\) with \(\|P\|=\|Q\|\). The bulk of the paper is devoted to constructing a counter example in the case that \(p\) is an even integer. The nature of the example provides an answer to a question of Rosenthal from a 1970 paper concerning subspaces of \(L_p\) which are spanned by sequences of independent random variables.
