The concept of the symmetric triangular fuzzy number is used and a new approach to defuzzify a general fuzzy quantity is introduced. The basic idea of the new method is to obtain the ``nearest'' symmetric triangular fuzzy number which a fuzzy quantity is related to. Unlike other methods, we defuzzify the fuzzy number, and at the same time obtain the fuzziness of original quantity. Mathematically, the new defuzzification method establishes a mapping from the set of all fuzzy numbers to the positive half plane of \(\mathbb{R}^2\). Some fundamental results on fuzzy numbers are recalled and the new defuzzification method is proposed and illustrated with examples.
