In this article the author has studied a class of parabolic problems with interior degeneracy in a set of positive measure and proved the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the equations by using nonlinear semigroup approach. Further Carleman estimates for such problems are established. Observability inequalities are obtained as a consequence of these estimates.
