The authors develop a framework for three particular transmission problems in electromagnetism and acoustics. They show that spurious resonances for coupled domain-boundary formulations based on direct boundary integral equations of the first kind originate from their Calderón identities. The kernel of the abstract coupled problem is fully characterized, and it is shown that it vanishes under the exterior representation formula.
