The paper deals with attractors for solenoid maps in dimension at least two. The transformations under investigation have a strongly contracting direction and an additional assumption of intrinsic transversality is made. Under such hypotheses the fractal dimension of each stable section of the attractor is studied and it is shown that the box counting dimension is equal to the Hausdorff dimension. The dimension of the attractor is then equal to the sum of this stable dimension, which depends continuously on the mapping, and the dimension of the toral component. The proofs follow strategies coming from symbolic dynamics and thermodynamic formalism.
