The authors consider matrices that are the sum of an identity matrix and a self-adjoint block Toeplitz matrix that has a symmetric band of zero blocks. Such matrices arise in the problem of orthogonalizing certain matrix-valued functions on the unit circle. A number of general results for block Toeplitz matrices are specialized to this class of matrices.
