In response to a question raised by \textit{C. A. McGibbon} the author gives an example of 1-connected finite CW-complexes, \(Z\) and \(Z'\), closed 4-dimensional manifolds, such that \(Z\) and \(Z'\) have the same (Mislin) genus (for each prime \(p\), the \(p\)-localization \(X_{(p)}\) and \(Y_{(p)}\) are homotopy equivalent), but \(\Aut(Z)\) and \(\Aut(Z')\) are finite groups having different cardinalities. The author also considers questions of genus invariance for the subgroup \(\Aut_*(X)\subset \Aut(X)\) consisting of those automorphisms inducing the identity on all integral homology groups. If \(X,Y\) are 2-connected finite CW-complexes in the same genus, he demonstrates that the groups \(\Aut_*(X)\) and \(\Aut_*(Y)\) are finitely generated nilpotent groups in the same genus. Using the subgroup \(\text{WI} (X) \subset\Aut(X)\) of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalences which are weakly homotopic to the identity map the author shows that for infinite CW-complexes the isomorphism class of \(\Aut_*(X)\) need not be a genus invariant. At the end of the paper two questions are formulated, variants of McGibbon's questions, concerning genus invariance for the subgroups \(\Aut_*(X)\) and \(\Aut(X)\).
