    A recent result of Mattila and Melnikov (Proc. Am. Math. Soc., to appear), states that for each finite Borel measure \(\mu\) in the plane and each rectifiable curve \(\Gamma\) the principal values of the convolution \({1\over z}*\mu\) exist almost everywhere with respect to arc-length on \(\Gamma\). Standard methods reduce the problem to an inequality of the type \[ \text{length} \{z\in\Gamma:C^*\mu(z)>t\}\leq Ct^{- 1}\|\mu\|,\;t>0, \] for each Lipschitz graph \(\Gamma\) and each measure \(\mu\), \(C^*\mu\) being the maximal operator of the truncated Cauchy integrals. In this paper a duality argument is used to give a simple proof of the above inequality for Ahlfors-David regular curves.
