The authors consider a non-stationary heat equation with a temperature defined on a finite segment. A boundary condition of the third type is stated at one of the segment's ends. The heat dissipation coefficient \(\sigma\) in this condition is an unknown non-smooth function of time. The problem is to find it from the noisy boundary temperatures measured at the end of the segment. To do this, the authors first prove the uniqueness of the heat equation's solution for quadratically integrable \(\sigma\). Second, the problem is reduced to a constraint optimization problem. An iteration scheme is introduced that allows to solve it. The inverse problem stated may be applied to the investigation of CPU heating regimes.
