The existence theory of functional differential equations with advanced and retarded arguments is studied. This is done by replacing the anticipation part in the equation by a suitable known function and solving the remaining problem by a contraction mapping argument. In this way, the theory becomes similar to the existence theory of pure delay equations. The authors provide several examples, where the assumptions of the main theorems are verified explicitly, and discuss the limiting behaviour of the solutions in some special cases.
