The author proves the following theorem. Let \(M\) be a compact Kähler manifold and \(D\subset M\) a domain whose complement \(B:=M\setminus D\) is an analytic subset of pure codimension 1. Assume that there is a line bundle \(L \rightarrow M\) with a holomorphic section \(s\in H^0(M,L)\) whose zero divisor coincides with \(B\) as a set. Let \(K \subset D\) be a compact subset and assume that there is a smooth plurisubharmonic exhaustion \(u\) on \(D\), such that \(i\partial \overline{\partial}u\) has at least 3 positive eigenvalues at every point of \(D \setminus K\). Then the restriction of \(L\) to \(B\) is not topologically trivial. In particular, this happens if the domain \(D\) is Stein. A similar result for the complement of a real analytic hypersurface is contained in [the author, Nagoya Math. J. 185, 161--169 (2007; Zbl 1141.32015)].
