Based on the fundamental results of \textit{D. Zagier} [Int. Press Lect. Ser. 3, No. I, 211--244 (2002; Zbl 1048.11035)], \textit{S. Ahlgren} and \textit{K. Ono} [Compos. Math. 141, No. 2, 293--312 (2005; Zbl 1133.11036)] obtained remarkable results towards congruences for traces of singular moduli of level 1. In this paper the author extends parts of their results to higher levels and gives several illustrative examples. At the end of his paper he makes some very interesting remarks related possible generalizations and a connection to the Monster group.
