In the paper under review, a coupling approach is used in connection with the following version of the relaxed commutant lifting theorem proposed by \textit{C.~Foias, A.~E.\ Frazho} and \textit{M.~A.\ Kaashoek} [Integral Equations Oper.\ Theory 42, No.~3, 253--310 (2002; Zbl 1060.47021)]: given Hilbert spaces \(\mathcal H\), \({\mathcal H}'\), a subspace \({\mathcal H}_0\) of \(\mathcal H\), contractions \(A:{\mathcal H}\to{\mathcal H}'\), \(T':{\mathcal H}'\to{\mathcal H}'\) and \(C:{\mathcal H}_0\to{\mathcal H}\) satisfying \(T'AC=A| _{{\mathcal H}_0}\) and an isometric lifting \(U'\) (acting on the Hilbert space \({\mathcal K}'\)) of \(T'\), there exists a contraction \(B:{\mathcal H}\to{\mathcal K}'\) such that \(U'BC=B| _{{\mathcal H}_0}\) and \(P'B=A\) (\(P'\) denotes the orthogonal projection of \({\mathcal K}'\) onto \({\mathcal H}'\)). The authors present a new proof and obtain a sufficient condition (which does not depend on \(C\) or on \(T'\)) in order to ensure the uniqueness of \(B\). A~theory on special extensions of a partial isometry is developed in order to characterize all the relaxed intertwinning liftings \(B\) in the particular case when \(C\) is an isometry. \textit{A.~E.\ Frazho, S.~ter Horst} and \textit{M.~A.\ Kaashoek} [Integral Equations Oper.\ Theory 54, No.~1, 33--67 (2006; Zbl 1108.47017), reviewed above] also used the coupling method in order to describe the set of all contractive solutions to the relaxed commutant lifting problem. The two papers are complementary and provide a complete study on the subject.
