The author introduces in a natural way the notion of measure with bounded variation with respect to a normed ideal of operators and gives a sufficient condition within this setting for an operator defined on a space of vector-valued continuous functions and with values in a Banach space to be contained in a fixed maximal normed ideal of operators. For the cases of absolutely summing operators, integral operators and \((r,p)\)-absolutely summing operators, this result has been obtained earlier by other authors and the present author, respectively, with different proofs from the one given here. As an application, it is shown that the injective tensor product of an integral operator with an operator belonging to a fixed maximal normed ideal of operators also belongs to this ideal.
